two weeks from today, I'll be leading a workshop on what I'm calling "code sonnets" on zoom, as one part of A Writer's Party, which is a wonderful free alternative to the AWP conference both in-person here in Philadelphia and online. The image above is a screenshot from one of the examples I've cooked up for the workshop, but we're going to make all sorts of things with just 14 lines of code at a time. you are cordially invited to join me for this online workshop on March 27th, 2025, presented in collaboration with A Writer's Party, in which we'll be experimenting with what I'm calling "code sonnets" – 14-line poems, with a turn at line 8, made of executable code. We'll be focused on making these in javascript using the p5.js library, but of course, you're welcome to use whatever you'd like. In the workshop, we'll go over these examples together, and then you'll get some time to make something of your own and share it with the group. You don't have to download anything to participate – you can make pieces just like those examples entirely in the browser, using the handy p5.js code editor and reference, which I'll introduce you to in the workshop. I'm excited to explore these ideas together, and my hope is that they'll provide a fun and approachable introduction to creative coding for newcomers and an interesting and inspiring challenge for everyone. Warren Longmire and I will be hosting another flat imagination workshop next month, this time at The Perch Music & Arts Workshop at The Emerald Wildflower Garden, a venue I fell in love with after playing a show there with Sadie Dupuis, Chris Campanioni, olga mikolaivna, John Pinto, Ollie Becker, Edward Longo, Orah Ruth, and Mike Bagwell to kick off Mike's new Ghost Harmonics performance series.

This installment of the flat imagination workshop will include performances by dani derks and The Goodbye Mind as well as a beginner-friendly digital synthesis workshop using VCV Rack, led by dani. The idea is "here's a cool thing I made; here's how I made it and how you can make it too." So if you're in Philadelphia or nearby, please join us to see what cool things dani has made and then to see how they made them and how we can make them too!

At the time, I had prolit in mind as a potential home for this, but as the piece developed, it started to veer away from what felt like prolit territory to me, and for a while, I just shelved it. A couple months ago, though, I was hanging out with Amy Saul-Zerby at Liner Notes (a wonderful reading series hosted by Alina Pleskova at 48 Record Bar here in Philly), and Amy and I got to talking about voicemail poems, and it just clicked with me that vmp was the right home for this piece. I sent it over to Amy, and she agreed, and now, here it is, out in the world. I hope you like it.
